Arsenal to Finalise £40m Riccardo Calafiori Deal
Arsenal are on the brink of securing their first major mid-year signing with a £40 million deal for Bologna player, Riccardo Calafiori.
The 22-year-old footballer, who has impressed with his performances for Italy during Euro 2024, is expected to complete the transfer this week. The agreement includes a significant sell-on clause; ensuring Basel, his former club, will receive 50% of any future transfer fee.
The Gunners have also made David Raya’s loan permanent for £27 million, and signed 18-year-old goalkeeper Tommy Setford from Ajax. However, Calafiori’s acquisition will be Arsenal’s big headline move as they prepare for the 2024/2025 season.
The left-footed defender, who can play both centre-back and left-back, was also a target for Juventus and other English Premier League clubs, but has seemingly committed to Arsenal.
Former Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci expressed regret over Calafiori’s move – he hoped for the young star to join the Spanish side – but praised his unique qualities and future potential.
